History
The
Carleton Grange is located in Tufnell Park, in the Borough of Islington
in North London. It consists of three brick Victorian houses that were
built in the 1800's. Before the Second World War, the houses were used
as hostels for young men. At this time they were called HYELM's, or
"Hostel for Youth-full Employees of Limited Means." After the war, the
three houses were used as a sort of halfway house for Navy men who had
returned from the war. Finally, around 1950, the houses were purchased
by the University of North London and named the Carleton Grange.
Prior
to September 2006, the Carleton Grange had housed university students,
and international travelers. However, due to its desirable location, it
was recently purchased by a developer, and will no longer be student
housing. We are glad to be able to carry on the tradition here at home.
